Chapter 29

The Victory Museum was undoubtedly that—a museum devoted to the great victories of the city-state. All its glorious past, and some of its present, was represented there in large areas within a circular building which, from what Ingrid had seen so far, was one of the few. Everything in this city was square or rectangular, except its soldiers’ shields and this building.

Large representations hung on the walls, depicting great battles of the past. In most of them, the great city and its impregnable walls were the center of the exhibition. Cabinets, armoires, tables and showcases were set around the tapestries, murals and paintings with remains from the battles. Most of them were pieces of armor and weapons used by the soldiers and generals of the city, as well as those of its opponents. The date and place of the battles, as well as the names of the generals who took part in them, were shown in large boxes.

Only a few areas were devoted to battles that had taken place in open fields. It seemed that in the past they had preferred to fight within the safety of their walls or that they had been attacked by foreign forces many times. In fact, she noticed that many of the battles had been fought against the other four City-States of the East Coast of Tremia. The rivalry between them and the struggle for the supremacy and control of maritime trade had written a large part of the city’s history.

Hence the many depictions of naval battles. Triremes and other war vessels from different time periods appeared on canvas and murals. Remains of maritime battles were exhibited and well preserved. There were sails and keels of ships on exhibition, as well as oars, rudders, and endless remains of triremes. Of course, there were also weapons and the armor used by the ships’ soldiers.

Ingrid asked Celopus to translate the information about the places and dates of some of the most important battles, as well as the forces of both sides and the final result. If the city had resisted all the attacks and ultimately been victorious at sea, things would have been different, but from what Celopus was translating, the people of this great city had lost quite a few maritime battles, as well as won some. Things looked pretty equaled in the final toll. The five City-States of the East Coast, the Noceans of the South, and the Coporneans of the Central Sea had gone through an infinitude of battles. They had even fought against the Kingdom of Irinel in the northeast.

After spending a long time at the museum, it was clear to Ingrid that this city lived for, and by its army and military tradition. In fact, many of the museum’s visitors were not foreigners like her or civilians of the city, but were soldiers and officers admiring their great city-state’s past and present glory.

“How many people live in the city?” she asked Celopus.

“Over a hundred thousand, according to the last official reckoning.
